If you spend a lot of time target or competitive shooting, you may be looking for a way to reduce the cost of 9mm ammo that you use. For shooters that hand load ammunition, reloading your 9mm ammunition could be a great option, and if you already have the equipment, it is easy to get started.

Tools And Supplies

If you are considering reloading 9mm ammo at home, you need to have a reloading press that supports handgun ammo. If you do, adding a die for the ammo is required, and you may need to get some other supplies.

Once shot brass or new cartridges as necessary, either save your brass from the range or purchase some from your favorite vendor. Once you have the brass cartridges, you need to inspect and clean them. You also need to buy or make bullets and get the correct primers for your cartridges. The local gun shop should have what you need and help you get set up to load your rounds at home.

If you are new to reloading ammo, you may need more equipment to get started, but the return on investment over time can make it worthwhile if you shoot a lot.

Cost Savings

Because 9mm ammo used in large quantities can be expensive, if you can reduce the cost with the tools you already have in place, you could make more than you would be able to purchase. The ammo uses a straight cartridge that is not difficult to load, and reusing your spent casings means you do not need to spend more money on them.

If you don't have enough brass cartridges, you can often buy them from local gun ranges at reduced prices or through online vendors that collect, clean, and sell them as well. Buying the casing does add to your reloading cost, but if you find a reasonable price, it will not add much to the process.

Bullet Options

Reloading opens up some options in the bullet types and weights you can use in your 9mm ammo. For shooters that want ammo for the range and also want to load home defense rounds, having the option to use several different bullets can be a bonus.

The weight of the bullet is crucial to performance, so if you are a competitive shooter, you may want a slightly lighter bullet than standard to allow it to travel straighter and faster downrange. Each part of the reloading process enables you to change how the 9mm ammunition works in your firearm. If you are experienced with the process, you can fine-tune the ammo you are using to gain the best performance advantages.
