Tips For Choosing Tournaments When You Play For A Club Baseball Team In High School
One thing that can often be unique about playing for a club baseball team when you're a high school student is that you can often select what showcase tournaments you'll attend. While some players compete for the club team at every tournament in which it takes part, others participate in only certain tournaments. Playing in every tournament will give you more of a chance to perform for college scouts, but if you aren't able to take part in every event, you'll want to choose the right tournaments. Here are some tips for approaching this decision-making process.
High-Profile Tournaments
Talk to your club team coaches about what tournaments on the schedule have the highest profile. High-profile tournaments typically attract the largest number of college scouts, which means that participating in one or more of these events will give you the best opportunity to perform for someone who may eventually offer you a scholarship. Your coaches will be able to identify a few tournaments on the schedule that have a high profile. In some cases, you may be aware of some of these tournaments based on their reputation. For example, you and your peers may have heard about a certain event being filled with scouts.
Travel Tournaments
There will likely be a few tournaments in your state, but there could be several others that will take place in other states. Ideally, you should choose a few of the latter tournaments to attend. Traveling for baseball games is something that will be commonplace if you obtain a college scholarship, so it's never too early to get in the habit of these trips. Travel tournaments present some challenges — you'll be sleeping in a hotel instead of your own bed and eating restaurant food instead of home-cooked fare, for example. Acquainting yourself with these challenges and learning to overcome them while you're still in high school can make them seem less daunting once you're a college player.
School Schedule
Don't overlook the importance of considering your school schedule when you're choosing which tournaments you'll play in with your club team. Many of these tournaments take place during the school year, and you want to be 100 percent focused during these events rather than potentially distracted by schoolwork. For example, a tournament scheduled for the weekend after school starts might be better than one a few weeks later, as you may be into more school projects and test prep by then.
