Essentials You Need For A Day Ride On The Trails
If you're planning an all-day mountain bike trail excursion, then there are important things you should pack. While some experts will give you a long list of items which could weigh you down, you really only need certain essentials. It's important to pack light, but effectively. If you don't want to weigh yourself or your bike down with a lot of stuff, then here is a list of some of the most essential items for an all-day trail ride.
Basic Bike Essentials
These are items you should carry with you on every ride whether it's on the trail or on the street. You should always have a helmet, cycling gloves, eye protection, and at least one water bottle. You should also carry two or more replacement tubes, a small patch kit and bike pump for those unexpected breakdowns.
Clothing Essentials
Clothing should be lightweight and not cumbersome. Check the weather report and dress appropriately for the temperature and precipitation. If you think the weather will be frequently changing, then dress in layers and bring a bag or pack to keep extra clothing. Wool-blend and moisture-wicking clothing are excellent if you are planning to ride in cold or wet weather.
Tool and Equipment Essentials
Besides a bike pump, you might also want to carry some Allen wrenches (or a multi-tool) and tire levers. Other equipment to pack includes a headlight and taillight, spare chain, lube, and zip-ties. If you have a little more room, you can also add in a master chain link for repairing the chain, a spare spoke and spoke tool, and extra cables, though chances are you won't need them on a day ride.
Miscellaneous Essentials
Pack things that make you more comfortable such as small meals and snacks or sunscreen. You might also want to think about carrying a travel-size first aid kit with you all the time. Make sure this kit contains things like antibiotics and anti-itch solution for bug bites. It also wouldn't hurt to bring along some insect repellent as well. Lip balm and toilet paper will also make your ride more comfortable.
Carrying a lot of weight and bags on your mountain bike or on your back could reduce your maneuvering ability. While you want to be prepared and safe, you shouldn't carry a lot of extra things you don't need, especially if you're only going to be out for a day or less. If you are traveling longer, then you need to buy special bags for trail riding and extra-light equipment. If you are thinking of checking out cycling trails and you don't know where to go and what to pack, contact a bike trail outfitter for riding locations and gear.
