When you participate in an activity that focuses on your movements, such as gymnastics and dance, then you'll need to wear the proper clothing. Leotards are used for both practice and competition. Leotards are almost like a second skin. This eliminates problems with loose clothing getting in the way. Here are some tips for buying leotards.

Try A Larger Size Than Normal

While a leotard should fit your skin closely and not have excess fabric bunched up, you don't want a leotard that is too small and constricting. You might have to buy a size larger than you normally wear to get the right fit. Try a leotard on before you buy if possible. This helps you learn the right size for you, but keep in mind that sizing varies by brand and you may wear a different size in a different brand. Also, if you're tall, try an X-long leotard for the most comfortable fit.

Learn What Your Instructor Wants

Don't buy a leotard for a new class or dance group before you learn about the rules set forth by your instructor. You can buy leotards in many styles. The cut of the hip can be high or low, and they can be sleeveless or have short or long sleeves. The cut of the back varies too, with some leotards being modest and having full coverage and others being more dramatic with the amount of skin allowed to show.

Your instructor will probably have rules in place about the type of leotard that is acceptable for class as well as for competitions. Choosing the right leotard for competitions is especially important or you could lose points just for wearing the wrong type of garment.

Look For A Built-In Bra

If you buy a leotard with modest styling, you can wear a bra underneath it. If the leotard has the back cut out, or if it has spaghetti straps, you can't wear a bra, or it would show. In that case, look for a leotard that has a bra built-in that offers as much support as you need. If you don't need a bra, then look for a leotard that has lining in the chest area that offers a little support and provides some extra coverage.

Buy For Fit Before Color

If you're taking a ballet class, you may be limited to a basic pink leotard. Gymnastic leotards are usually more colorful so that you can express your individual personality through the various colors and design patterns. While color and visual appeal are important, the most important guideline to follow when you shop for a leotard is the fit.

The garment should remain in place while you move, stretch, and twist your body so that you don't have to worry about it riding up or moving out of place. It should feel like a second skin so you can forget you're wearing it and focus on your moves.
